Choosing the right crypto exchange is the most important decision a UK investor makes when entering the market. With dozens of platforms available — and only some holding FCA registration — knowing which ones to trust is essential. This guide compares the best crypto exchanges available to UK users in 2026.

What Makes an Exchange “Best” for UK Users?

UK investors should prioritise four things: FCA registration, security track record, fee structure, and ease of use. Exchanges without FCA registration offer no regulatory protection if something goes wrong.

1. Coinbase — Best for Beginners

Fees: 1.49-3.99% (standard) / 0.40-0.60% (Advanced Trade)
FCA registered: Yes
Coins: 240+

Coinbase is the easiest exchange to use. Its mobile app is well-designed and its educational content helps beginners understand what they’re buying. The catch: fees on the standard interface are very high. Switch to Coinbase Advanced Trade immediately to pay competitive rates. Excellent for your first £1,000 of Bitcoin or Ethereum.

2. Kraken — Best for Security

Fees: 0.25-0.40% (standard) / 0.10-0.26% (Pro)
FCA registered: Yes
Coins: 250+

Kraken has operated since 2011 without losing customer funds to a hack — an almost unique record in crypto. Fees are competitive on Kraken Pro. Slightly less beginner-friendly than Coinbase but the security track record is unmatched. Best for larger holdings.

3. Revolut — Best for Existing Revolut Users

Fees: 1.5-2.5% spread
FCA registered: Yes (e-money institution)
Coins: 100+

If you already use Revolut for banking, buying crypto through the same app is convenient. The fee structure (built into the spread rather than shown explicitly) is higher than dedicated exchanges. Best for small, occasional purchases of major coins like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Note: Revolut crypto is not held in your own wallet — you can’t withdraw coins to an external address.

4. Binance — Best for Altcoin Selection

Fees: 0.10% maker/taker
FCA registered: Warning issued (check current status)
Coins: 350+

Binance offers the broadest coin selection and lowest fees of any major exchange. However, the FCA issued a consumer warning about Binance Markets Limited in 2021, and its UK regulatory status has been complicated since. Check the current FCA register before using Binance. Not recommended for beginners or large holdings given the regulatory uncertainty.

Which Exchange Should You Use?

For most UK beginners: start with Coinbase or Kraken. Both are FCA-registered, secure, and straightforward to use. Once you’re comfortable, you can explore other platforms for specific assets or lower fees.

Always verify registration at the FCA Financial Services Register before depositing funds.
