The global supply chain that delivers your smartphone involves hundreds of companies across dozens of countries. Raw materials are mined in one continent, components manufactured in another, assembled in a third, and shipped through multiple logistics partners before reaching you. At each step, information is recorded — but in different systems, by different companies, often on incompatible databases. Verifying what actually happened is difficult, time-consuming, and expensive.
Blockchain offers a different model: a shared, tamper-proof ledger that every participant in a supply chain can write to and read from. When each step is recorded on-chain, the complete history of a product becomes verifiable by anyone with access. This has profound implications for fraud prevention, food safety, sustainability verification, and regulatory compliance.
The Problem With Traditional Supply Chain Records
Traditional supply chain record-keeping suffers from several fundamental problems. Each company maintains its own records in its own systems. Reconciling records across companies requires manual effort and creates delays. Records can be altered — fraudulent documents are a significant global problem. Tracing the origin of a specific product (which farm did this food come from? which factory made this component?) is slow and often incomplete.
These problems have real consequences. When the 2013 European horsemeat scandal broke, it took weeks to trace contaminated products through the supply chain. E. coli outbreaks in fresh produce regularly result in broad recalls affecting many farmers because the specific contamination source cannot be quickly identified.
How Blockchain Changes Supply Chains
A blockchain supply chain implementation works by having each participant record events on a shared blockchain as they occur: “This batch of mangoes was harvested at farm X on date Y.” “This shipment left Port Z on date A.” “This pallet was received at warehouse B on date C and temperature readings were within specification.”
Because records are written to a blockchain, they cannot be altered after the fact without detection. The complete provenance of any unit — from raw material to retail shelf — is verifiable in seconds rather than weeks. When a problem occurs, affected batches can be identified and recalled precisely rather than broadly.
Real-World Implementations
Walmart piloted a blockchain food traceability system with IBM Food Trust (built on Hyperledger Fabric) for leafy greens. The result: tracing the origin of a package of sliced mangoes went from 6.5 days to 2.2 seconds. This capability is transformative for food safety — the ability to trace a contaminated batch in seconds rather than days saves lives and reduces the scope of recalls.
Maersk and IBM partnered to build TradeLens, a blockchain-based platform for global shipping documentation. The platform aimed to digitise the paper documents (bills of lading, customs declarations, certificates) that slow global trade. At its peak, TradeLens processed over 800 million shipping events. The project was ultimately shut down in 2022 due to insufficient industry adoption — an instructive example that blockchain supply chain projects face adoption challenges, not just technical ones.
De Beers built Tracr, a blockchain platform for diamond provenance tracking. Each diamond is assigned a digital record on blockchain documenting its origin and journey through the supply chain, enabling verification that a diamond is conflict-free. This directly addresses the “blood diamond” problem that has plagued the industry.
Pharmaceutical Supply Chain
Drug counterfeiting is a serious global health problem — the World Health Organization estimates that 10% of medicines in low-income countries are counterfeit. The UK’s Falsified Medicines Directive requires serialisation of pharmaceutical products, and blockchain is being explored as infrastructure for the serialisation databases required.
MediLedger is a blockchain network for the pharmaceutical supply chain in the US, allowing manufacturers, distributors, and pharmacies to verify drug authenticity and track recalls. Similar implementations are in development across European and UK pharmaceutical distribution networks.
Sustainability and ESG Verification
Blockchain is increasingly used to verify sustainability claims — one of the areas where traditional record-keeping is most prone to “greenwashing.” A company claiming its product is sustainably sourced can have that claim verified on blockchain by recording the certified sourcing events immutably.
Carbon credit tracking, forest certification (PEFC/FSC), fair trade certification, and organic food labelling are all areas where blockchain verification is being piloted or deployed to improve the credibility of sustainability claims.
Challenges and Limitations
Blockchain supply chain projects face the “garbage in, garbage out” problem: the blockchain can record data immutably, but it cannot verify that the data entered was accurate. If a supplier falsely records that a product was certified organic, that false record is immutably stored. IoT sensors (automatically recording temperature, location, handling) help by reducing the human entry point, but they introduce their own failure modes.
Adoption requires all supply chain participants to use the same system — difficult when participants include hundreds of small suppliers, many in developing countries with limited technical infrastructure. The Maersk/IBM TradeLens failure illustrates how commercial and adoption challenges can defeat technically sound blockchain projects.
