Coinbase Review 2026: Best for Beginners — But You Must Switch to Advanced Trade

Coinbase is the most widely used cryptocurrency exchange for beginners in the UK. Its clean interface, strong brand recognition, and FCA registration make it an obvious first choice for new crypto investors. However, Coinbase’s standard interface charges fees that are significantly above the industry average — a problem that is easily solved by switching to Coinbase Advanced Trade. This review covers everything UK users need to know in 2026.
The Fee Problem — And the Solution
Coinbase’s standard interface charges fees of 1.49% to 3.99% per transaction for UK users, depending on payment method. These are among the highest fees of any major exchange. A £1,000 Bitcoin purchase on Coinbase’s standard interface can cost £15-£40 in fees — far more than the £2-£5 you’d pay on Kraken or Binance.
The solution is Coinbase Advanced Trade (formerly called Coinbase Pro), which is available within the same Coinbase account. Advanced Trade uses a maker-taker fee model starting at 0.60% taker / 0.40% maker for retail users — dropping to 0.10% taker for higher volume traders. This is still above Kraken or Binance’s rates, but vastly better than the standard interface.
Every new Coinbase user should switch to Advanced Trade immediately. It uses the same account, the same funds, and the same FCA registration — there’s no reason to use the standard interface for trading.
Regulatory Standing
Coinbase holds FCA registration under the UK’s crypto AML regime and is one of the most compliant exchanges operating in the UK. It is also publicly listed on the NASDAQ (ticker: COIN), which subjects it to US Securities and Exchange Commission oversight and regular financial reporting. This level of regulatory exposure is unique among crypto exchanges and provides an unusual degree of transparency.
Coinbase is well-positioned for the UK’s full crypto authorisation regime opening in September 2026, and is widely expected to be among the first platforms to receive full FCA authorisation.
Security
Coinbase has not suffered a major platform hack that resulted in customer fund losses. The company holds the majority of customer crypto in cold storage and carries insurance for assets held in hot wallets. As a US public company, it publishes regular financial statements that include information about its asset custody practices.
Individual account security has been an occasional concern — phishing attacks and SIM-swap attacks targeting Coinbase accounts are documented. Using a hardware security key (such as a YubiKey) rather than SMS for two-factor authentication significantly reduces this risk.
Available Assets
Coinbase lists over 240 cryptocurrencies for UK users. The selection covers all major assets and a broad range of mid-cap tokens. Coinbase is notably selective about which assets it lists, focusing on projects that have undergone some compliance review — this is both a feature (lower scam token risk) and a limitation (some legitimate assets are not available).
Features
Beyond trading, Coinbase offers staking for Ethereum, Solana, and several other proof-of-stake assets. It also operates Coinbase One — a subscription service (around £29/month) that eliminates trading fees on up to £10,000 of monthly volume, which can be worth it for regular traders.
Coinbase’s mobile app is among the best-designed in the industry. For beginners, the educational content integrated into the app (Coinbase Earn, which pays small amounts of crypto for completing learning modules) is a genuinely useful introduction to the sector.
Verdict
Coinbase is the right starting point for UK crypto beginners. Its FCA registration, strong security record, and clean user experience make it trustworthy and accessible. The only adjustment every user must make is switching to Advanced Trade immediately to avoid the excessive standard interface fees.
For active traders, Kraken or Binance offer lower fees. For beginners making their first crypto purchase and building a long-term holding, Coinbase is a solid, regulated choice.
