The AI Race in May 2026: Gemini 3.5 Flash, OpenAI’s New Structure, and What’s Actually Changing

Google’s Gemini 3.5 Flash outpaces rivals on speed. Microsoft and OpenAI restructured their partnership. And 76% of large organisations now have a Chief AI Offi

The AI industry moves fast. Twelve months ago, GPT-4o was the benchmark everything else was measured against. Today, the model landscape has changed significantly, corporate structures are being rewritten around AI, and even boardrooms are being transformed.

Gemini 3.5 Flash: Google’s Speed Play

Google’s Gemini 3.5 Flash is now generally available, delivering frontier-level intelligence at four times the speed of comparable models. Pricing is $1.50 per million input tokens and $9 per million output tokens, with a 1 million token context window — equivalent to roughly 750,000 words of text in a single call.

For businesses evaluating AI tools, Flash represents a meaningful step in the ongoing commoditisation of large language model capability. When capable AI is fast and cheap, tasks that were too expensive to automate at scale become viable.

Microsoft and OpenAI: The Partnership Changes Shape

The two companies have moved from an exclusive to a non-exclusive partnership. Previously, Microsoft had exclusive commercial rights to deploy OpenAI’s technology through Azure. Now OpenAI can deploy through other cloud providers and channels — a significant expansion of commercial freedom reflecting OpenAI’s growing negotiating leverage.

OpenAI’s New Deployment Company

OpenAI has announced the OpenAI Deployment Company, backed by more than $4 billion in initial investment, focused on accelerating enterprise AI adoption. This separates the research function from the commercial deployment function — a structural move mirroring how successful technology companies organise as they scale commercially.

76% of Organisations Now Have a Chief AI Officer

According to a survey of large organisations, 76% now have a dedicated Chief AI Officer (CAIO) — up from just 26% in 2025. That’s a tripling in one year, reflecting how quickly AI has moved from experimental technology to operational priority.

AI in the Boardroom

Lloyds Banking Group has become the first FTSE-listed company to deploy an AI tool directly in its boardroom, using it for AI-assisted analysis and summarisation of board papers. The directors still make decisions — but the fact a FTSE blue-chip is comfortable deploying AI in this context signals how far confidence in the technology has grown.

The Impact on Search and Content

Data from Q1 2026 shows pages holding top-three Google rankings experienced click-through rate declines of 18% to 34% once AI-generated answers appeared above the fold. When users get answers directly from Google’s AI without clicking through, the economics of SEO-driven content creation change fundamentally.

Regulation: EU and China Diverge

The EU AI Act’s August 2026 deadlines for high-risk AI systems remain in force. Companies deploying AI in recruitment, credit scoring, biometric identification, and certain public services must meet compliance requirements by August 2026. China’s new regulation covering AI chatbots and virtual companions comes into effect on 15 July 2026.

What This All Means

For individuals: develop genuine familiarity with AI tools — they are capable enough to meaningfully improve productivity in research, writing, analysis, and coding. For businesses: when 76% of large organisations have dedicated AI leadership, the competitive pressure on those without it increases. AI is no longer a differentiator — it’s becoming table stakes.
