Nearly 30 students from North Carolina State University report that artificial intelligence was used to produce sexually explicit images featuring their photos, according to a search warrant.
The search warrant dated Nov. 1, 2024, indicates a female student reported to NC State police that “obscene” photographs of her and other students were discovered weeks earlier on erome.com, a website that allows users to share pornographic images and videos.
The student said the images were computer generated, adding the women pictured on the website did not create or share the images, according to the warrant.
NC State police received reports from a total of 28 women who said their photos were used without consent. According to the warrant, many of the images “depict the face of the women artificially imposed on nude women performing sex acts.”
Many of the targets were sorority members, according to the warrant, and a folder on the erome.com website was labeled “NC State” and “college sorority s****.” The files even included some of the victims’ names.
The search warrant requests access to email addresses associated with the erome.com account, cloud and location data, and any images the user stored or downloaded.
An NC State spokesperson said the investigation is active and ongoing.
Following the reports, NC State sent a letter with links and resources, including no-cost counseling sessions, to all the women impacted.
On Tuesday, the university released the following statement:
In October, when Fraternity and Sorority Life was alerted of the situation, a message of support including relevant university resources were provided to all Panhellenic females in collaboration with The Women’s Center, The Office of Student Life and Advocacy, Student Legal Services, The Office of Equal Opportunity and the NC State Police Department. University teams continue to be of service for those impacted.
WRAL News also asked erome.com for information about the account used to create the images and is awaiting a response.
