CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — One local company is set to change the way we navigate city streets. Omnisight, a cutting-edge technology firm based in the Lowcountry, is developing a device that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to improve traffic flow and increase safety at intersections across the country.
Omnisight’s CEO and co-founder, Chris McGarty, explained that the company is building an advanced traffic management system that utilizes AI to make real-time decisions, similar to how a traffic cop would direct traffic. The device, which incorporates a radar, camera, and a powerful thousand-core processor, works by assessing the number of cars waiting at an intersection and adjusting the traffic signal accordingly.
“We’re essentially using AI to simulate how a traffic cop would route traffic through a busy intersection,” McGarty said. “It’s more efficient because it can see the entire intersection and make better decisions based on real-time data.”
The technology’s potential is vast. Unlike the traditional traffic signal system, which changes lights based on a single vehicle’s presence, Omnisight’s device takes into account the overall traffic situation. This includes variables like congestion levels, weather conditions, and even unexpected incidents like a school bus breakdown. The AI is capable of learning traffic patterns and adjusting its responses accordingly, which could significantly reduce congestion and even save lives in the process.

Omnisight’s traffic monitoring devices are already in operation in major cities like Phoenix and Richmond, with plans for further expansion across the U.S. McGarty is confident that cities will soon opt into this program, recognizing the potential benefits of adapting their traffic systems with AI.
Although many people have concerns about the integration of AI into everyday life, McGarty believes the technology is ultimately for the greater good.
“Our goal is saving lives,” he said. “AI can do a great job in this respect, and once people see the benefits, they’ll appreciate what it has to offer.”
Omnisight is not just focused on traffic; they believe their technology has applications in other industries too. With a strong belief in the future of AI, they are actively looking for new ways to implement their technology nationwide.
