Scams Targeting UK Crypto Investors Right Now
Phishing Attacks
Fake emails, texts, and websites impersonate Coinbase, Kraken, Binance, or even HMRC. They steal your login credentials or trick you into entering your seed phrase on a cloned site. In 2026, AI-generated phishing emails are near-impossible to distinguish from real ones.
Warning signs:
- Urgency — 'Your account will be suspended in 24 hours'
- Sender domain is one letter off (coinbbase.com, krakenn.io)
- Link goes to a different domain than the exchange
- Asks for seed phrase or 2FA code
⚠️ Never click links in unsolicited emails. Always type the exchange URL directly into your browser. Legitimate exchanges never ask for your seed phrase.

Scammers now use AI to clone the voice and face of Elon Musk, Martin Lewis, or popular crypto influencers in fake video ads and live streams. These deepfakes promote fake investment platforms or crypto giveaways. In 2026 these are increasingly common on YouTube and Facebook.
Warning signs:
- Celebrity 'endorses' a new crypto platform in a video ad
- Promised returns of 2x or more 'guaranteed'
- Short window to invest — artificial urgency
- Platform not listed on FCA register
⚠️ No celebrity endorses crypto investments in random social media ads. If you see one — it is a scam, no exceptions.

A new token project hypes itself on Twitter, Telegram, and TikTok. It raises money from investors, then the developers pull the liquidity and disappear overnight. The token crashes to zero. Memecoin season in 2026 has seen dozens of rug pulls every week.
Warning signs:
- Anonymous development team with no verifiable identity
- No independent smart contract audit
- Promises of 1000%+ returns in weeks
- Heavy celebrity or influencer promotion with paid disclosure
⚠️ Research the team. Demand an audit from a reputable firm. If anonymous developers and unrealistic APY — walk away.

Professional-looking websites promise 10–40% monthly returns. Your dashboard shows impressive fake profits — but when you try to withdraw, you are told to pay tax, a fee, or a 'verification deposit'. Real examples: Lyndora, Aurum Foundation, Robincapitaltrader.com — all flagged on this site.
Warning signs:
- Guaranteed fixed returns on crypto
- Not listed on FCA register
- Withdrawal requires paying fees upfront
- Pressure to recruit friends for bonuses
⚠️ Check every platform on the FCA register before investing. Guaranteed returns do not exist in crypto.
Romance Scams (Pig Butchering)
A scammer builds a relationship with you online — on dating apps, WhatsApp, or social media — over weeks or months. They earn your trust before introducing a 'can't-miss' crypto investment platform they control. Once you invest, the platform shows growing profits. When you try to withdraw everything is locked.
Warning signs:
- New online contact is unusually interested and attentive
- They mention crypto investment casually after weeks of chatting
- They have made 'amazing returns' on a specific platform
- The platform is not findable on FCA register or Google
⚠️ Be sceptical of any online contact who eventually introduces you to an investment opportunity. This is one of the most financially devastating scams operating in the UK.
Fake Exchange Apps
Counterfeit apps appear in app stores or are distributed via WhatsApp links, posing as Coinbase, Binance, or lesser-known exchanges. Once installed they steal your login details or private keys.
Warning signs:
- App downloaded via a link in a message, not from app store
- App reviews look fake or have very few ratings
- Asks for seed phrase during setup
- App icon or name is slightly different from the real one
⚠️ Only download exchange apps via the official exchange website. Search the exchange name in the FCA register first.

Even legitimate platforms get hacked. In 2026, the Humanity Protocol suffered a $31 million exploit that crashed the H token by 80% within hours. Understanding which platforms are high-risk — and keeping funds in self-custody — is essential.
Warning signs:
- Token price drops 50%+ suddenly with no news
- Withdrawal disabled on the platform
- Official channels go quiet or give vague statements
- Blockchain explorers show large unusual transfers
⚠️ Keep long-term holdings in a hardware wallet. Never leave more than you can afford to lose on any exchange.

Reporting matters — it helps authorities identify patterns and shut down operations. Most victims do not report because they are embarrassed. Do not let that stop you.
