Best Crypto Exchanges UK 2025: Compared for Beginners

The best crypto exchanges for UK beginners in 2025. We compare Coinbase, Kraken, Crypto.com, and Bitrue on fees, safety, FCA registration, and ease of use.

The best crypto exchanges for UK beginners in 2025. We compare Coinbase, Kraken, Crypto.com, and Bitrue on fees, safety, FCA registration, and ease of use.

Choosing the wrong exchange is one of the most common mistakes new crypto buyers make. Some charge high fees hidden in the spread. Others aren’t registered with the FCA. A few have been hacked. This guide cuts through the noise with honest comparisons based on what actually matters for UK beginners.

Coinbase is the world’s largest publicly-traded crypto exchange and is registered with the FCA. It’s the most beginner-friendly option available to UK users — the app is clean, buying is straightforward, and customer support is better than most competitors.

Fees: Coinbase charges a spread of around 0.5–2% on simple buys through the main app. If you use Coinbase Advanced Trade (formerly Coinbase Pro, free to access), fees drop to 0.6% maker / 1% taker — significantly cheaper.

Pros: FCA-registered, excellent app, 250+ coins, good security (97% of assets in cold storage), strong educational resources.

Cons: Standard app fees are high. Customer support can be slow. Not the most coins available.

Best for: Anyone buying Bitcoin or Ethereum for the first time. If you just want a simple, safe place to buy crypto with a debit card or bank transfer, Coinbase is hard to beat.

Kraken is one of the oldest and most respected exchanges in crypto. It’s FCA-registered, has never been hacked, and offers lower fees than Coinbase through its Pro interface (Kraken Pro, free to access).

Fees: 0% maker / 0.26% taker on Kraken Pro. Standard Kraken fees are similar to Coinbase’s, so use the Pro view to save money.

Pros: Rock-solid security record, low fees via Kraken Pro, wide coin selection (350+), staking available, good for GBP deposits via bank transfer.

Cons: Interface less intuitive for beginners. App feels clunkier than Coinbase.

Best for: UK users who’ve bought Bitcoin before and want lower fees or access to a wider range of altcoins. Also great if you want to stake Ethereum.

Crypto.com stands out for its Visa card, which gives cashback in crypto on every purchase — up to 8% depending on your card tier. If you’re spending money anyway, earning crypto back on it is genuinely useful.

Fees: 0.075% for high-volume traders, 0.4% taker for most users. Competitive. Buying with card is more expensive (up to 2.99%).

Pros: FCA-registered, Visa card with crypto cashback, crypto Earn (interest on holdings), large coin selection, regular promotions.

Cons: Higher-tier card benefits require staking CRO (their native token). Some earn rates have been cut compared to earlier years.

Bitrue doesn’t have FCA registration, so it’s not our first recommendation for UK beginners. But if you want access to a large selection of smaller altcoins that aren’t listed on the major exchanges, Bitrue is worth knowing about.

Fees: 0.098% flat trading fee — among the lowest in the industry.

Pros: 700+ coins, very low trading fees, good staking/yield products, XRP-focused with deep XRP liquidity.

Cons: Not FCA-registered. Interface can be overwhelming for new users. Use only with funds you understand the risks of holding on an unregulated exchange.

If you do use Bitrue, consider moving your coins to a hardware wallet rather than leaving them on the exchange long-term. See our best crypto wallets guide for options.

We evaluated each exchange on five factors: FCA registration (or equivalent regulation), trading fees, ease of use for beginners, security track record, and GBP deposit options. Exchanges with a history of major hacks or regulatory problems were excluded.

Coinbase. It’s FCA-registered, publicly listed (NASDAQ: COIN), has never suffered a major hack, and stores 97% of customer assets in cold storage. It’s not perfect — fees can be high — but for safety, it’s the benchmark.

Yes. All FCA-registered exchanges require identity verification (passport or driving licence + proof of address). This is a legal requirement under anti-money laundering rules, not something the exchange can opt out of.

For regular traders, Kraken Pro (0% maker fee) and Crypto.com are among the cheapest. Coinbase Advanced Trade is also much cheaper than the standard Coinbase app. Bitrue has very low fees but isn’t FCA-registered.
