AI coding agents are changing how developers work, but the experience of using them alongside a terminal has often involved switching between windows and copying output back and forth. Microsoft Intelligent Terminal addresses this directly — it is a fork of Windows Terminal that brings AI agent assistance natively into the command line.

Intelligent Terminal is an open-source fork of Windows Terminal developed and published by Microsoft on GitHub. It adds native AI agent integration directly into the terminal environment, making tools like Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Codex, and Gemini CLI accessible from within the terminal without context switching.

The project is in an early experimental stage, but Microsoft has published it publicly and is actively developing it. It can be installed from the Microsoft Store alongside the standard Windows Terminal.

A docked, context-aware chat pane sits alongside your terminal session. The agent has visibility into your terminal context — the current directory, recent commands, and output — and can provide relevant assistance without you having to copy and paste.

When a command fails, the terminal can detect the error and offer a one-keypress fix. The agent analyses the error output and suggests a corrected command, which you can apply immediately.

Complex or multi-step agent tasks run in separate terminal tabs, keeping your working tab unobstructed. You can monitor progress across multiple agent tasks simultaneously.

Intelligent Terminal auto-detects compatible agent CLIs on your machine — Copilot, Claude Code, Codex, and Gemini. It launches them through an ACP (Agent Communication Protocol) wrapper that standardises communication between the terminal and the agent.

Track all active and past agent sessions across tabs from a single management panel.

Intelligent Terminal is for Windows developers who use AI coding agents — particularly Claude Code, Copilot, or Codex — and want a more integrated terminal experience. It is most valuable for developers who spend significant time in the terminal and find the current context-switching workflow frustrating.

Free. Available from the Microsoft Store and from github.com/microsoft/intelligent-terminal.

Intelligent Terminal is an exciting direction from Microsoft. The core idea — AI agents that are aware of your terminal context — is exactly right, and the early execution is promising. It is not ready to replace standard Windows Terminal as your daily driver yet, but it is worth installing alongside it.

Rating: 7/10 — Excellent concept and promising early execution. Windows-only and experimental status limit immediate adoption.
