SpaceX Discloses 18,712 Bitcoin in Historic IPO Filing

SpaceX has revealed it holds 18,712 Bitcoin — worth over $1.9 billion — in its IPO filing. It’s one of the largest corporate Bitcoin disclosures ever made.

SpaceX’s long-anticipated IPO filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission has included a disclosure that has sent ripples through both the crypto and traditional finance worlds: the company holds 18,712 Bitcoin on its balance sheet, a position worth approximately $1.98 billion at prices prevailing at the time of filing in May 2026.

The disclosure makes SpaceX one of the largest corporate Bitcoin holders in the world, ranking behind only MicroStrategy — which holds over 200,000 Bitcoin — and behind the combined holdings of several Bitcoin ETF providers. For a company primarily known for rockets and satellite internet, the Bitcoin position is a significant revelation.

How SpaceX Built Its Bitcoin Position

The IPO filing does not provide a complete history of SpaceX’s Bitcoin acquisition, but the prospectus indicates the company began accumulating Bitcoin in late 2021 and continued through 2022 and 2023 — including during the significant price declines of that period. The average cost basis implied by the disclosures suggests the company acquired much of its position at prices well below current levels, generating unrealised gains that have materially strengthened its balance sheet.

The Elon Musk connection is obvious. Musk has been a prominent — if unpredictable — advocate for Bitcoin and has also promoted Dogecoin extensively. Tesla, where Musk serves as chief executive, purchased $1.5 billion of Bitcoin in early 2021 and subsequently sold a large portion. SpaceX’s Bitcoin position appears more durable than Tesla’s, having been held through multiple market cycles without the disclosures of major sales that characterised Tesla’s position.

What the Disclosure Means for the IPO

From an IPO pricing perspective, SpaceX’s Bitcoin holdings are a double-edged consideration. On the positive side, the unrealised gains on the position represent a significant cushion of value that is not reflected in the company’s operating income. At current prices, the Bitcoin position is worth more than many of SpaceX’s core business units.

On the negative side, Bitcoin’s volatility introduces earnings uncertainty that traditional public market investors may find uncomfortable. A 30% decline in Bitcoin prices — which has happened multiple times in Bitcoin’s history — would reduce the position’s value by approximately $600 million, a meaningful swing for a company that is, in its core business, still not consistently profitable.

The SEC has strict disclosure requirements for material assets, and Bitcoin holdings of this size clearly qualify. Prospective public market investors will need to form a view on Bitcoin volatility as part of their assessment of SpaceX’s overall financial position.

Corporate Bitcoin Adoption in Context

SpaceX’s disclosure adds to a growing list of companies that hold Bitcoin on their corporate balance sheets. MicroStrategy, led by Michael Saylor, is the most prominent and extreme example — the company has staked its entire corporate identity on Bitcoin accumulation. Tesla holds a smaller position after its 2021 sales. Several smaller technology companies have disclosed Bitcoin holdings.

The strategic logic varies by company. MicroStrategy’s argument is that Bitcoin is superior to cash as a treasury reserve asset. Tesla’s original stated rationale was improving liquidity flexibility. For SpaceX, the filing does not articulate a specific treasury strategy, leaving analysts to speculate about whether the Bitcoin position reflects Musk’s personal conviction, a deliberate corporate treasury policy, or some combination.

Implications for UK Investors Watching the IPO

SpaceX’s IPO is expected to be one of the most significant listings of 2026. The company’s Starlink satellite internet service has achieved commercial scale in the UK and across Europe, and its launch business is the dominant provider of commercial space access globally.

UK investors interested in the IPO should be aware that US IPO shares are typically offered through US brokers and become available to international investors on the secondary market after listing. UK-based brokers including Hargreaves Lansdown, Interactive Investor, and AJ Bell provide access to US-listed securities, though currency risk and different tax treatment compared to UK-listed investments apply.

The Bitcoin component of SpaceX’s balance sheet adds crypto market risk to what would otherwise be an aerospace and technology investment. Investors who want SpaceX exposure without Bitcoin exposure may find the combined position uncomfortable — but have no mechanism to separate them within a single stock.

What This Means for Bitcoin’s Narrative

SpaceX’s disclosure reinforces the institutional legitimacy of Bitcoin as a corporate treasury asset. When one of the world’s most innovative and closely watched private companies holds nearly $2 billion in Bitcoin, the argument that Bitcoin is a speculative fringe asset becomes harder to sustain.

For UK investors, the practical lesson is familiar: if major corporations and institutional investors are allocating to Bitcoin, it warrants serious assessment as part of a diversified portfolio, even if — like any asset — it carries significant risk.

If you hold crypto on any platform, check whether it is FCA-registered at the FCA Financial Services Register. Always size speculative positions appropriately for your overall financial situation.
