What Is Sui Network? The New Layer 1 Blockchain Explained

Sui is a Layer 1 blockchain that launched its mainnet in May 2023. Built by Mysten Labs — a team of former Meta engineers who worked on the Diem (Facebook’s failed stablecoin project) and Move programming language — Sui takes a fundamentally different approach to how blockchain state and transactions are organised.

The Object Model: What Makes Sui Different

Most blockchains — including Ethereum — use an account model. Your wallet has a balance. Smart contracts have state. Everything flows through accounts. This creates bottlenecks: transactions involving the same shared state must be processed sequentially.

Sui uses an object model. Everything on Sui is an object: tokens, NFTs, game items, smart contracts. Objects are owned by addresses. Crucially, transactions involving different objects that are independently owned can be processed in parallel — they do not compete for the same state.

This parallel execution allows Sui to scale horizontally. The more validators in the network, the more transactions can be processed simultaneously. Theoretical throughput reaches hundreds of thousands of transactions per second — though practical throughput depends on real network load.

The Move Programming Language

Sui uses Move, a programming language originally developed at Meta for the Diem project. Move was designed specifically for managing digital assets safely. Its key properties:

Resources cannot be copied or accidentally destroyed — only moved between owners. This prevents common smart contract bugs like double-spending or accidental token burning. Strong type safety catches errors at compile time rather than at runtime. The language makes it harder to write exploitable smart contracts.
