Toncoin powers The Open Network (TON), a blockchain that has found something most crypto projects struggle to achieve: a massive, built-in user base. With deep integration into Telegram — the messaging app used by over 900 million people — TON has access to a distribution channel that most blockchains can only dream of.
In 2026, TON is one of the top-10 cryptocurrencies by market cap and hosts a growing ecosystem of Telegram-native applications, games, and DeFi protocols accessible directly within the Telegram app.
The History of TON
TON has an unusual origin story. The blockchain was originally conceived and funded by Telegram’s founders — Pavel and Nikolai Durov — who raised $1.7 billion in a 2018 token sale (one of the largest ever). The SEC sued Telegram in 2019, arguing the token sale violated US securities law. Telegram settled, paid a $18.5 million fine, and officially abandoned the project in 2020.
But the open-source code survived. An independent community of developers took over the project, rebranding it from “TON” (Telegram Open Network) to “The Open Network.” Telegram later endorsed this community-developed version, integrated TON payments into the Telegram app, and the project surged in value.
Pavel Durov’s arrest in France in August 2024 briefly caused market panic and TON price drops. The project continued operating independently — a demonstration that the community-controlled blockchain had genuine independence from Telegram’s corporate fate.
How TON Works
TON is a proof-of-stake blockchain with a sharding architecture designed for extreme scalability. It can theoretically process millions of transactions per second through dynamic sharding — automatically splitting the network into smaller pieces as load increases.
Validators stake TON to participate in consensus and earn rewards. The staking yield is approximately 3–5% annually. Unlike many blockchains, TON’s governance is relatively centralised in practice — the Durov brothers and the TON Foundation have significant influence over development direction.
Telegram Mini Apps and TON Integration
The key to TON’s growth is Telegram Mini Apps — small applications that run inside Telegram without requiring users to leave the chat interface. These can be games, exchanges, payment tools, or any other application that can be built as a web app.
Notcoin — a tap-to-earn game embedded in Telegram — attracted over 35 million players before its token launch in 2024. Hamster Kombat attracted over 100 million players. These numbers dwarf any other crypto gaming application in history — though they also raised questions about the sustainability of tap-to-earn mechanics and whether engagement translated to genuine value.
TON’s Telegram Wallet allows in-app payments in TON and USDT. Users can send crypto to any Telegram contact using just their username — no wallet address needed. This dramatically reduces the friction of crypto payments for non-technical users.
DeFi on TON
DeDust and STON.fi are the primary decentralised exchanges on TON, processing hundreds of millions in monthly volume. Evaa Protocol handles lending. The DeFi ecosystem is younger and less deep than Ethereum’s or Solana’s, but growing rapidly driven by Telegram’s user funnel.
Risks and Concerns
TON’s relationship with Telegram creates both its primary advantage and its primary risk. If Telegram were to remove TON integration or be forced to do so by regulators, much of TON’s user acquisition advantage disappears. The SEC’s historical concerns about Telegram’s original token sale have not fully resolved. The Russian origin of Telegram and its founders creates geopolitical complexity.
The tap-to-earn game model that drove initial TON adoption may not produce sustainable users — many “players” were primarily speculators rather than genuine crypto users. Separating genuine adoption from airdrop farming is genuinely difficult.
