Kraken is one of the oldest continuously operating cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, founded in San Francisco in 2011. In 15 years of operation, it has never suffered a major hack — an almost unique distinction in an industry plagued by security failures. For UK investors, Kraken is FCA-registered and offers one of the most comprehensive trading platforms available. This review covers everything you need to know in 2026.

Why Kraken’s Security Record Matters

In 15 years of operation, Kraken has not lost customer funds to a hack. This is extraordinary in an industry where Binance, Crypto.com, Bybit, Bitrue, and dozens of smaller exchanges have all experienced significant security incidents. Kraken’s track record is the single most important reason serious crypto investors favour it for large holdings.

Kraken’s security infrastructure includes offline cold storage for the majority of customer funds, regular third-party security audits, and a well-funded bug bounty programme. The exchange was also one of the earliest to implement proof-of-reserves — a cryptographic method that allows customers to verify their funds are actually held by the exchange.

Fees

Kraken operates a tiered fee structure based on 30-day trading volume. Standard rates for retail users are 0.25% maker and 0.40% taker — slightly above average for a major exchange. For high-volume traders, fees drop significantly: at $50,000+ monthly volume, maker fees fall to 0.15% and taker to 0.26%.

For UK users, Kraken Pro (Kraken’s advanced trading interface) offers better fee rates than the basic Kraken interface. Switching to Kraken Pro is recommended for anyone trading more than a few hundred pounds per month.

Fiat deposit options for UK users include bank transfer (free) and faster payments (also free). Card deposits are available but carry a 3.75% fee. Withdrawals via bank transfer cost £0.29 flat.

Available Cryptocurrencies

Kraken lists over 250 cryptocurrencies for UK users — a solid selection that covers all major assets and many mid-cap altcoins. It is notably more selective than exchanges like Binance or OKX, which is arguably a feature: Kraken does not list assets without conducting due diligence, which reduces (though doesn’t eliminate) the risk of scam tokens appearing on the platform.

Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, Cardano, Polkadot, and all major stablecoins are available. Kraken also offers futures and margin trading for experienced users, though these products carry higher risk.

UK Regulatory Status

Kraken holds FCA registration under the UK’s crypto anti-money laundering regime. It also holds regulatory approvals in several other jurisdictions including the EU (under MiCA), the United States, Canada, and Australia. This breadth of regulatory compliance reflects Kraken’s institutional-grade approach to compliance.

Kraken is well-positioned for the full UK crypto authorisation regime opening in September 2026. Its compliance infrastructure already meets or exceeds most of the anticipated requirements.

Staking

Kraken offers on-chain staking for numerous assets including Ethereum, Solana, Polkadot, and Cardano. Staking rewards are paid directly to your Kraken account. The yields are broadly in line with what you’d earn staking independently, minus a small commission Kraken retains for managing the process.

Note that the FCA has expressed concern about staking services offered by centralised exchanges. Kraken and the FCA have had previous friction on this topic. Check current staking availability for UK accounts before assuming all staking options shown on the platform are accessible to UK users.

Verdict

Kraken is the best all-round crypto exchange for UK investors who prioritise security and regulatory standing. Its 15-year security record is unmatched, its FCA registration is genuine, and its fee structure is competitive for active traders using Kraken Pro.

The main limitation is selection — if you need access to hundreds of altcoins, Binance or OKX offer more choices. But for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the 50 most significant cryptocurrencies, Kraken is the most trustworthy platform available to UK investors.

Verify Kraken’s registration at the FCA Financial Services Register.
